“Vol” is short for “volume.” In cars, it is primarily used to adjust the volume of the audio system, with “Vol+” and “Vol-” serving different functions: “Vol+” increases the volume, while “Vol-” decreases it.

It is very easy to use; simply adjust the “Vol+” or “Vol-” knob to your preferred volume level. Currently, some car models feature volume controls on the steering wheel rather than on the center console. The advantage is convenience—you don’t have to search for the controls on the center console, which is often cluttered with buttons, thereby improving safety to some extent.

It’s important to note that many drivers turn up the volume while driving to make the music sound more immersive. Personally, I don’t recommend this practice, as the car’s interior is very different from a room—it acts like a reverberation chamber for the speakers. When the car audio volume is too high, it can cause irreversible damage to the ears and, in severe cases, even affect hearing. Therefore, keep the volume at a moderate level and avoid turning it up too high.

Additionally, you don’t necessarily need to turn up the volume to make music sound more dynamic. First, the human ear is naturally more sensitive to mid-range frequencies and less sensitive to high and low frequencies. Therefore, to make music sound more dynamic, you can focus on the mid-range frequencies.

Most car audio systems feature a “Loud” button, which activates the “equal loudness” function. This feature adjusts the frequency distribution of the music, and when used appropriately, it can enhance the listening experience. Furthermore, this function can improve the system’s resistance to external noise to some extent, helping to counteract engine and tire noise while driving and thereby enhancing the overall musical experience.
